Mar 22nd
Guys, the students of Lahore College of Arts and Sciences (LACAS) have prepared a national song and video for March 23rd. This project was undertaken by LACAS as an institution and the band Laal to show solidarity with the people of Pakistan in these difficult times and to give a message of hope and peace. Just appreciate the spirit these darling buds of May and advance their cause of peace and nation building.
Welcome my president
Sep 11th
The presidential election and swearing in marked a new era in Pakistan’s history. Thus far the democratic forces particularly the People’s Party have complained and rightly so in my opinion that whenever they won elections they were given government without true power or authority. Consequently before they could make any substantial contribution they were sent packing with the allegations of corruption and hence the corruption of the establishment was never exposed. This time however the story has changed. The PPP government has not only carved its niche in most of the provinces but at the federal level they have gone one step further by consolidating its hold on power through the presidency. The only way things can go wrong now is through extreme incompetence or stupidity which I am sure will never come. It is my belief that the government and the new president will work in tandem to strengthen the federation and prove that good governance is possible.
In fact there are two things that make Asif Zardari’s presidency quite unique even in the PPP’s history. First he is a true survivor. While fate and chance must have played their part well it must not be forgotten how he has managed politics during the last six months. With a shaky coalition he has brought results that we never had in the past. The second important thing is for better or worse he is quite a well known man. In politics when you are a household name you always have the leverage to surprise people by delivering more than what is expected of you. However I am concerned about one very important thing. People’s Party must not allow itself to lose the support of the Awami National Party. For one it is among the most principled political groups. For two the country needs a moderate political group from NWFP at the centre and in the province. With this thing in mind there is nothing that the democratic government cannot do. Welcome my president and best of luck.
Return of McCarthyism in Pakistan
Aug 13th

I knew it, I KNEW IT! Once Musharraf felt that the political class was not ready to sing his song this time he would look back to the team of nobodies he had used for his first emergency cabinet. And I was sure that when the scene was so much devastating for our prez they would certainly resort to McCarthyism. For those of you who are not aware of this genre of cheap politics let me explain. In the early days of the Cold War a Senator Joseph McCarthy had risen to much heights invoking patriotism and branding every dissident as a soviet or communist mole. The technique was simple. Pick a critic, throw aspersions on his person, invoke patriotism, and condemn that person without paying any heed to his arguments. This technique worked for a while and then renowned CBS anchor Edward Murrow brought an end to his tyranny by exposing him. Now a similar gang of intellectual thugs has invaded our capital and our television screen in support of Musharraf.
Yesterday Marvi Memon daughter of Nisar Memon was on television and she started shrieking at the top of her voice in one of the talk shows in the presence of suave Ayaz Amir and Fauzia Wahab. Quite predictably she alleged that Amir and Wahab’s parties were not patriotic. Why? Because she had moved a bill on Northern Areas and the recent developments in Indian Kashmir which could not find instant support? I mean look at this. These are the folks who are supporting a general who turned the country into a US colony by providing three bases here. The same general who sold countless Pakistani citizens to the US without even letting them have their basic right to prove themselves innocent in a Pakistani court of law a perfect example of which is Doctor Aafia Siddiqui. And yet these folks have no shame. Allege your opponents, shout at them, keep repeating the same stupid mantras and hope the people will swallow this attitude again.
Likewise, the former Chief Minister of Punjab Peja Elahi addressed a public meeting in which he claimed that during their regime Karzai did not have courage to criticize Pakistan. I am afraid Mr Elahi is on drugs or else he would have not said such a stupid thing. I mean have you forgotten how Karzai had confronted Mush on his various foreign visits?
Another example is our dear Mushahid Hussain and this is the saddest part. We could digest the stupid blabbering of Marvi and Pervaiz but when a seasoned man makes mockery of logic our hearts weep. Mushahid has forgotten that Benazir Bhutto was assassinated only a few months ago. He has forgotten that people like me still have his lectures on audiotapes extolling the PPP. Since Musharraf now gives him importance the he has started speaking gobbledygook. He says that the PPP had succeeded in elections only benefiting from Musharraf’s policies. Does he mean the murder of Benazir Bhutto? He further states that if Musharraf has he should quash the NRO. Mr Mushahahahid remember that day when the same Musharraf had imprisoned you alleging you along with the Sharifs of taking part in a conspiracy? People like me had spoken and worked tirelessly then for your freedom. Again when you were not being given any importance in the party it was yours truly who had written tirelessly in your support. And now you sit there and make a mockery of the people’s mandate. You know full well that Musharraf’s election from an outgoing parliament was sham and yet you sing his song. My dear sir politics is not the name of such naked opportunism. Of all the people at least you should have shown some reason. Maybe while abolishing NRO Musharraf should send him back to the gaol too.
But the tragedy doesn’t stop here. Some of the anchors are also being used to whip up support for Musharraf. I must urge all PPP, PMLN and ANP leaders to avoid participating in the shows of the following anchors till the time the situation has not settled: Katrina Husain, Mujahid Barelvi, Jasmine Manzoor and PJ Mir. In Katrina’s program the way Fauzia Wahab was ignored or censored was really sad.
Our own Kamran Khan is doing an interesting thing these days also. He seems to be busy in frightening us of the consequences of Musharraf’s departure, albeit subtly. For instance he repeatedly tells us that Asif Zardari is to be the next President as if it was something horrible. But see this assertion in the light of the previous work of Mr Khan. All these media geniuses are building pieces of a case against Musharraf’s sacking. I don’t understand why especially because Mr Khan has suffered as much as anyone else owing to Mush’s arbitrary policies. As for Katrina I was disappointed to note that she was not even listening to the talk of Musharraf’s opponents as was visible from her questions. This is really sad.
And finally it seems the terrorists also have some affinity with Musharraf. See at a time when the NWFP assembly was to adopt the no confidence motion against Musharraf there was an attack on an Air Force bus. It is clear that once Mush is gone the nexus of terrorism will break automatically.<-->
Cause: See Chase Ford walk again
May 19th
Twenty years ago, no one believed that individuals with injured spinal cords could ever recover and possibly even walk again. But indeed they are! Last month, you learned about Chase Ford, an adorable toddler whose innocent tumble from a sofa appeared to have left him completely paralyzed at age two. Thanks to his own determination and the specialized skills of the staff at one of the Reeve Foundation’s NeuroRecovery Network facilities, Frazier Rehabilitation Institute in Louisville, the now five-year old Chase was able to participate with Team Reeve in the Kentucky Derby miniMarathon on April 26 and actually walked the last 100 feet of the race under his own power! Reeve Foundation caught this amazing feat on video and are thrilled to be able to share it with you. Please take a couple of minutes to view this exciting video and share the encouraging news with others.
Although Chase’s rehabilitation must continue, you can see firsthand how much brighter and more promising his future will be because of breakthroughs in spinal cord research and the new treatment options that are available right now.
Helping adults as well as kids like Chase recover and hopefully walk again is what the Reeve Foundation is all about. The vital work that we do is made possible through the friendship and financial contributions of all of our compassionate supporters.
With adequate resources, dedicated, top-notch scientists and specialized treatment teams like those helping Chase, we can continue to dramatically improve the lives of people with injured spinal cords.
Reeves Foundation welcomes you to join Team Reeve with a tax deductible contribution. Every gift, large and small, is deeply appreciated.
Together, so much is possible. Thank you.
Sincerely,

Magnanimity, vendetta and justice
Mar 25th

The propagandists are back in action, this time however to save their own skins. But before I move even a bit further on discussing their antics and semantics I must pay Pervez Musharraf a compliment. During his tenure, one must concede, propaganda was not only promoted as a cottage industry but experiments in this field were also taken to new heights. Not only quite polished people defying their commitment to their own community joined the bandwagon, but also for every step taken absolutely different and often contradictory though not entirely unconvincing arguments were given.
Now these folks are reminding everyone who would listen, the virtues of magnanimity and forgiveness. Vendetta, they say, damages everything, therefore the new government should neither be seen or heard being vindictive. Now this is quite a shrewd idea. Indeed these Platos at the time of the emergency (read martial law) imposition thinking that Musharraf was invincible, went to such an extent in sycophancy that even the personal security of many of the victims was considered perpetually under threat. It must be remembered that it was not any of the victors that shut down the Geo and ARY uplinking facilities from Dubai. Nor did they threaten the Owner of Geo/ Jang / The News through obnoxious emails. These were done by the previous government, its moles in intelligence and other places and above all the sycophants. These folks first claimed that the opposition parties had bought a lot of coats and placed their own workers wearing them in the lawyers’ conventions in order to show whip up anti Musharraf sentiment. When they realised that the movement was indeed represented by the lawyers they started questioning the patriotism of the protesters, including the media and media workers under censorship and complained about a foreign conspiracy. And of course you’ll remember the badly beaten lawyers and journalists too. Should everyone forget what was done to him/ her when these folks were in power and forgive their horrible excesses now that they do no longer have clout? Magnanimity sounds alright but forgetfulness will be an unforgivable crime in the present situation and I’ll tell it to you later in this post. More >
BENAZIR BHUTTO AWAITS
Mar 23rd

As the country’s national assembly elects its new premier today, there are whispers going on in my head. Perhaps it is passionate imagination but I feel the spirit of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto is talking to me asking when her assassins will be brought to justice. Those wretched souls that snatched from us our shining beacon of hope, deprived the young Bhutto-Zardaris of their lovely mother and me of my personal idol, should not be allowed to escape.
It was in the very space that I had called Benazir Bhutto, the Indira Gandhi of this nation. It is in this space too and in my column titled “A letter to Oxana” (Friday, December 7, 2007) that I had written and promised my one year daughter the following words: “When your father gained consciousness, a democratically elected prime minister who had promised hope to the poor of the country had already been hanged through a conspiracy between foreign powers, a military ruler and others. I was too young to do or understand anything then, but I have always wondered why our elders tolerated this crime. Now we are living under another such rule and the people are being subjected to state terrorism. Our generation has finally been offered a golden opportunity to do our due. I promise again we will not fail you.” But alas we failed again. Our Indira Gandhi was slain in broad daylight. Another Prime Minister was so brutally killed. It will be a pity if we cannot make an example of those who did it.
As sat in my office that tragic day (and the word tragic sounds only a hollow word for the agonizing pain it has left behind), I felt so weak and helpless that I cannot even tell you. I have carried this pain hidden inside my heart. I did not have enough courage to even pen an obituary. But today if I do not speak out my heart explode. Dear Sirs and Madams, the respected members of the parliament, the first thing you need to do is to institute pass a bill asking the UN to institute an international inquiry into the assassination of our beloved leader. No doubt democracy is best revenge and the revelation of the truth is also. This house should see the portraits of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto sitting next to that of the Quaid, in recognition and memory of hopes that they had promised to the people and to prove that we do not forget our fallen heroes.
Please let today’s events be of meditative nature where the country’s most representative body reflects upon the sacrifices made for this nation and the ways to fight those who dare to waylay the hopes of the people. If it is not done they will strike again and again and will not leave any hope with us at all.
Please know that these are not superficial words written by any opportunist. I have spent most of present life in pursuit of some principles and values. I seek neither any benefit nor any office. I just want justice to prevail in this country. I want the real heroes to be honored and the villains pretending to be heroes exposed. There has to be a limit to hypocrisy. If god forbid this cannot happen today, I fret to think, how will I face my daughter Oxana and our next generations when they grow up and hold us accountable. Today, a Prime Minister will be chosen with an unprecedented number of votes. He should remember that these votes are actually being given to Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. That she remains to this day our Prime Minister elect. Long live democracy, long live justice, long live hope, long live federalism and long live Pakistan.
If any of my seasoned friends in the media, among the intelligentsia, and in the blogosphere feel a bit embarrassed by the raw expression of my emotions they should forgive me for today I do not know no whether I should laugh at the joke our lives have become or weep. I am missing the face of the country’s brightest leader very badly today.
Cause: Help people living with paralysis walk
Mar 20th
You can help find a cure for paralysis and help people like Chase walk again. On April 26, five-year-old Chase Ford will be participating in the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon. But it’s not just Chase’s young age that will make this feat so amazing.
It was almost three years ago that Chase fell and hit his head on the arm of a couch. He damaged his spinal cord and lost all motor function from the neck down. The only things he could move were his eyes. Doctors told his mom, Renee, that her son would never walk again.
But thanks to caring friends like you, that’s not how this story ends.
Refusing to accept the doctors’ grim prognosis, Renee turned to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Chase began a cutting-edge rehabilitation program at our NeuroRecovery Network (NRN) site at Frazier Rehab Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. Soon he was regaining feeling and movement.
Chase is proving that nothing is beyond hope. The answers are just around the corner. And with your support for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, we will find them.
Chase’s progress is nothing short of miraculous. At our NeuroRecovery Network center at Frazier – one of seven NRN sites around the country – he began a revolutionary new locomotor training that repeats the motions of walking on a treadmill to stimulate muscles and nerves in the lower body. Never before had this type of treatment been tried with a child, especially one as young as Chase.
As Chase’s therapy continued, he began to slowly regain control of his trunk, muscles in his legs began to function, and he just started feeling better. All of these changes are the result of the nerves in his spinal cord reorganizing. Chase was literally being rebuilt.
Today, after putting in hundreds of hours of hard work, Chase can walk over 100 yards on his own and will soon lead TEAM REEVE in the Kentucky Derby Festival miniMarathon to raise much needed funds for our spinal cord injury research.
This is the fulfillment of Christopher Reeve’s bold vision: bringing groundbreaking spinal cord injury research from the laboratory to patients. Chase’s astounding recovery was paved by the work of the dedicated physicians, researchers and therapists supported by the Foundation. We have committed $77 million to advance the work of the most accomplished scientists in the world.
By donating online today, you can further this research that is making the “impossible” possible and help thousands of people like Chase who are living with these injuries improve their lives, their careers, and their dreams. Donating online is safe, easy, and secure and your contribution is tax-deductible.
This April, when Chase is participating in the miniMarathon – alongside his therapists, friends, and Foundation staffers – he’ll prove with each step that there is no limit to what we can achieve, together.

War is illegal
Against a background of escalating ecological crises, and the fact that large parts of the world´s population are being exposed to extreme poverty, inhuman working conditions and increasing social tensions, the annual global military expenditure has risen to more than 1000 billion dollars.
The military-industrial complex of just a few G8 countries is responsible for the overwhelming part of this spending, causing incalcuable social and ecological consequences.
Unequal distribution of global resources, increasingly controlled by large multinational companies, global debt policy and unfair international trading practices ultimately could not be maintained without military security. In many countries the military is used to repress critical opposition.
The terror attacks of September 11, 2001 are increasingly used to justify systematic surveillance and the dismantling of constitutional rights. Even European countries have helped to establish Guantanomo-like secret prisons, where torture in all probability takes place. More >
