To God and the generals

To God first,
Dear God,

This is the month of Ramadhan. Muslims believe that you are closest to us all. In this month there was another bomb blast in Islamabad, the city that is named after your faith, submission to peace. You say you have created us all. You create us as children. Then God in your land people kill the children in the name of your faith. Can you not even hear the fast thumping of tiny hearts orphaned or soon to be killed in your name? Dear God, I know you do not usually meddle with free will but this is the moment of desperate measures. Your creations, the noblest of all you say, are being broken like cheap waxwork. Do not send any Messiah. Do not even send any miracle. Just clear your name and teach us all to love and live in peace. Please save the poor children being maimed or injured, save the women just now being raped. God these are not the antics or semantics of a writer, but my dearest wishes. You are the omnipotent, the compassionate and the merciful. Please give me a chance to believe in you again.

And Now Generals,
Dear Sirs,
I know you pride yourselves on being merchants of doom and death. I know that there is nothing more masculine in your view than being known as a butcher. But the days when the wars were fought only with muscles are gone. You are supposed to have hearts and minds too. The saddest thing is that despite having all such provisions and the best or maybe the worst of the technology you still are defining wars in terms of narrow national or at times even corrupt and selfish group interests. The more powerful you are the better human beings you are expected to be. I don’t doubt that the murder of three thousand innocent Americans was not a heinous crime. Yet pray tell me what wrong have the children of Baghdad, Kabul and Waziristan have done to you? If today you’ll not stop your savagery to stop it will one day target your own children too. Yes I do not prophecy often but mark my words that by the end of this all you’ll have turned so brutish that you’ll take pleasure in hunting your own children. This is not the war of faiths or lands. Stop and think things through. After all there is always way to be good again.
