Welcome my president

The presidential election and swearing in marked a new era in Pakistan’s history. Thus far the democratic forces particularly the People’s Party have complained and rightly so in my opinion that whenever they won elections they were given government without true power or authority. Consequently before they could make any substantial contribution they were sent packing with the allegations of corruption and hence the corruption of the establishment was never exposed. This time however the story has changed. The PPP government has not only carved its niche in most of the provinces but at the federal level they have gone one step further by consolidating its hold on power through the presidency. The only way things can go wrong now is through extreme incompetence or stupidity which I am sure will never come. It is my belief that the government and the new president will work in tandem to strengthen the federation and prove that good governance is possible.
In fact there are two things that make Asif Zardari’s presidency quite unique even in the PPP’s history. First he is a true survivor. While fate and chance must have played their part well it must not be forgotten how he has managed politics during the last six months. With a shaky coalition he has brought results that we never had in the past. The second important thing is for better or worse he is quite a well known man. In politics when you are a household name you always have the leverage to surprise people by delivering more than what is expected of you. However I am concerned about one very important thing. People’s Party must not allow itself to lose the support of the Awami National Party. For one it is among the most principled political groups. For two the country needs a moderate political group from NWFP at the centre and in the province. With this thing in mind there is nothing that the democratic government cannot do. Welcome my president and best of luck.

    Riaz Haq:

With Zardari as president and Gilani as PM, the PPP has no genuine excuses to not perform now.
They should take their responsibility seriously to go about delivering on their oft-repeated promise of roti, kapra aur makan. Please read http://www.riazhaq.com/2008/09/uncle-sam-saves-fannie-and-freddie.html for serious suggestions to that.

To the people of Pakistan I’d like to say: It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Here’s more for you to read: http://www.riazhaq.com/2008/09/light-candle-dont-curse-darkness-in.html

Pitafi, you are a pitiful chamcha of Zardari now.

You will make a u-turn once he screws up or you find that you cannot get a job with him.

Or maybe that’s why you moved to Lahore. Working with the PPP Punjab cell?

Fatima, bless you. You know I can do with a laugh. I mean can you possibly believe that I would sell out? No I think not. It is only that you are too angry. But not to worry, that phase would be over soon. As for my moving to Lahore is concerned no I am not working for any political group. I am only working in my journalistic and anchoring capacities with a channel called NewsOne. If that is what you wanted to know.
And Haq I agree with what you have stated in the comment box.
