Look who’s talking - Jamshed Gulzar on Musharraf
One thing my dear fellows that I cannot digest is hypocrisy. In fact my doctor claims that it has the potential to threaten my life. It was in this condition that I had to watch Lt Gen (retired) Jamshed Gulzar Kiyani’s interview on Geo TV. As I told you it was difficult for me to take it in one go. I kept watching it off and on. However a few things were clear to me. The retired lt gen is thirsting for Musharraf’s blood. From Kargil to the Red Mosque he made some very startling claims. If one thing was certain it was that he did not want any stone left unturned to hit Musharraf where it damages him the most. I am not a supporter of Musharraf and cannot deny that he must be guilty of some or all of these crimes. However that is not the point. Those who think this ex serviceman is a champion of democracy are grossly mistaken. He is no such thing.
First he should have been asked in capacity was he working in the ISI during the days of the Kargil war. Perhaps that would have reflected enormously on his democratic credentials. When he says he thinks this or that he is clearly hiding more than he is telling. Apart from that he was not a revolutionary hero who resigned when he saw the decisions being taken in undemocratic manner. He not only waited till he got retired but also accepted a lucrative post to the FPSC where he worked for considerable time. Again if my memory serves me right he was not forced out of that job because he was taken any independent political stance. He was cut loose because he had objections on withdrawal of certain powers. The government wanted the powers to recruit ISI workforce to be withdrawn from the FPSC. The world over such hirings are done by the agencies themselves. Mr Kiyani did not want that. Also one reason behind his sacking was that he was failing to bring about any substantial change to the organization. It is prerogative of the government to do that. And the next thing you know he had organized a press conference in which he lashed out at Musharraf. I don’t know what you think of it but I am baffled by the way these folks become revolutionary overnight. Sirs if you have done something own it. Support of such friends would only damage the Anti-Musharraf movement.
Having said that let me say that those who are getting angry on Geo Tv should think again. Geo has treated the matter with professional deftness. And to my astonishment Dr Shahid Masood has proven that when he is not doing the script he can work wonders in probing with quite frankness and ease. I have to say it because an email is being distributed on the internet for boycott and ad boycott of the channel. Folks, it is the responsibility of a news channel to bring to you as much insider news as it can. It should have been the retired general, the one to hold his tongue on national interest matters if such a thing really exists.
