Have you ever wondered why the stock market is crashing all the time these days? Have you wondered why Musharraf seems so cheery in spite of having lost support of virtually everyone? Well the answer is that because Musharraf sees his days of strength returning. Whether that will happen or not is another question, yet you cannot deny the perception. The biggest pointer in this case are bourses. Pervez Musharraf enjoys the support of the movers and shakers of the stock market. So whenever he wants to show to the world that his radical remedy is the best and the status quo cannot be sustained the stock markets start crashing. Of course there are fat cats involved. First is Arif Habib who has been part of the steel (read it steal if you like) mill controversy and hence the sacking of the chief justice. Then there is AKD and numerous others. Hence you can say it with confidence that the crashing stock markets and the flight of the make believe capital (which in essence never was in the country in first place) will be used as a cogent excuse to send the democratic order packing. Indeed the blackened toadies of the dictators like Sharif uddin Pirzada are advising Musharraf to dissolve the assemblies again. The failures to be cited like the inflation, power crisis, flight of the capital and the market crash are actually of the previous government’s own making. Yet the devil’s advocates are banking on the possibility of the people being fickle minded and their myopic memory.
Is it possible at this stage? Well men nay mice like Sharfoo (Shariffudin) at least think this way. Having said that I believe if such an attempt is made it will blow up in the dictator’s face. For one the present courts will not stand with Musharraf. They might have taken oath under the PCO but the ground realities have changed. Musharraf might be living in the Army House but he does no longer control the army. He may still be in the west’s good books but the western policy makers are no fools and know where the power lies. Hence there is little chance of the bid succeeding. However there still can be a suicidal attempt.
Suppose he dissolves the assemblies, the matter is referred to the courts and the courts reverse the decision, what will happen? The power stalemate will suck in the army. Chances are that the president on his way out will take along his impeachers on the pattern of Ishaq Khan and Nawaz Sharif stalemate in nineties. Unfortunately the establishment reckons that the People’s Party is not at this moment to win again if it is sent packing. It is keeping in view this thing that the party is now hardening its stance. My concern is that if the party does not build bridges with all the important elements who may hold the chips in case of a stalemate while consolidating the PDA into a formal electoral alliance there might democratic process needs to continue in this country unimpeded or else there might be threat to the state itself. I think Musharraf needs a serious advice from the Army Chief, Chairman JCSC, our foreign peers and all the well wishers of the country. If that doesn’t happen Shariffudin Pirzada and his likes may prevail. Whatever the PPP leadership is thinking it should be able to implement it quickly and win back the lost ground through giving the people the much awaited relief.
