Free Pakistani prisoners of conscience now (originally posted on Friday, November 16, 2007)
Government has withdrawn restrictions on Benazir’s movement. It is also withdrawing some of the similar measures taken against the female civil society activists. It is clear that such steps are being in view of Negroponte’s visit. Yet we have not heard a word on the whereabouts of or plans regarding other prisoners of conscience like Aitzaz Ahsen and Imran khan. As a personal friend of these two gentlemen I am seriously worried about their safety. The government needs to show some sanity and release them immediately. Aitzaz’s family is also being hounded by the security apparatus. Imran’s sisters and family members were also publicly tortured and humiliated by the police. This attitude of the government is shameful and needs to change now. The government is also warned that if anything happens to any of these stalwarts or others, no one but it will responsible for the consequences.
In a separate news two children against the government were gunned down by the police yesterday. Evidence of this was even screened on television. This calls for an open war. Our
western friends are requested that if they cannot stand firm with us in our principled cause they should not try to embarras us with the proposals to tolerate Musharraf even a bit.
Without an open apology by Musharraf followed by his decision to step down and restore harmony in the system. Friends of Pakistan will have to understand this or else succumb to one man’s blackmail forever.
