There is no denying that the elections should take place at the earliest, if possible at the pre-scheduled date. However let me be very clear. Elections in the presence of Musharraf, the current election commission, the Kangaroo courts, the caretaker setup, the PEMRA and its dark laws will essentially be a farce. I say it with confidence because the government’s Zilla Nazims (District Gubernators) have extracted the NICs from all of the district staff for quite some time and their votes will be used wherever they find the opposition candidates are winning.
I believe that Musharraf with his coterie of sycophants need to leave now and a neutral setup should hold the elections immediately. If they fail to comply or then try to rig the election they will be solely responsible for the consequences. We only want their exit not their physical end but let us not deny the fact that there is too much pent up anguish which if unleashed will not be controlable. In their own interest they are advised to leave and seek refuge in some foreign country. The time to act is now.
As for the sympathy vote let me remind people who think that it will go wasted if the elections are delayed, something. The people of this country are not as fickle minded as is often suggested. People made it sure that Bhutto’s daughter wins even eleven years after his execution despite all machinations of the establishment. Whenever free and fair polls take place you’ll see the results. However I am worried about the presence of Musharraf because he poses serious threat to the federation. Even if he has not committed as many follies as are alleged popular sentiment is totally distrustful of him. He has made these circumstance himself. If he doesn’t leave now the country may have to pay even bigger price.
